On 11 August 1997, Zoleykhah Kadkhoda, of the town of Bukan in western Iran, was arrested, charged with engaging in sexual relations outside marriage, and immediately sentenced to death by stoning. On the same day, Kadkhoda, age twenty, was buried from waist down and savagely stoned. Due to mass protests by enraged local residents, the regime's mercenaries were forced to stop the stoning. Kadkhoda, severely injured on her face and body, was then taken to the hospital. The opposition of the people of Bukan resulted in the regime's insinuation that she will be given amnesty if she survives.

Extract From PEN American Center on Reappearance of Faraj Sarkuhi : - (27-DEC-97)

Faraj Sarkuhi who disappeared on November 3, reappeared on December 20. He is now at his mother's home, but he is not allowed to leave Iran.
On November 12, the official press insisted that he had indeed left the country -- in the face of the undeniable fact that he never arrived in Germany. PEN has since learned that prior to his attempted trip, Sarkuhi was offered help obtaining an exit visa from an Iranian security agent in charge of "intellectuals" in Iran, known to PEN only as Mr. Hashemi, who had been Sarkuhi's interrogator on September 12. Mr. Hashemi told Sarkuhi to buy him a ticket and notify him of the date of departure, and to meet him at 4 a.m. on the departure date so that Hashemi could personally escort Sarkuhi through airport security. Sarkuhi met Hashemi at the money exchange booth of the Tehran airport at the specified time, but never arrived in Germany. In a letter PEN has obtained written to his wife before his disappearance but after his most recent interrogations, Sarkuhi stated, "I have no knowledge of the charges (that will be made) against (myself and other Iranian writers), but whatever they will be, and whatever may happen, I want you to know that I have been an innocent victim... In case...I am made a victim ... I expect you to provide for the children and take good care of yourself. I give my love to you and the children..."
PEN is pleased to discover that Faraj Sarkuhi is alive in Tehran, and calls on the government of Iran to respect his right to leave Iran if he wishes. PEN furthermore calls on the government of Iran to ensure the safety of all other writers in Iran, and to respect their right to unimpeded freedom of travel to and from Iran.

Once again the evil regime of the Islamic Republic of Iran has shown its contempt for free thinkers and writers, by detaining Faraj Sarkuhi the editor of the Adineh magazine. By writing letters of protest, it is the least you can do to save a life. Your letters of protest will make the regime aware of the publicity surrounding Faraj Sarkuhi, should they decide to harm him in any way. Write your letters of protest to the embassies of the Isalmic Republic in your countries of residence and get your friends to do the same. Don't let the mullahs get away with harming our citizens.
In a joint show of unity 8 Iranian opposition organisations also signed a statement which demanded the safe release of Faraj Sarkuhi. These organisations were :
Center for Defence of Democracy in Iran, National Movement of Iranian Resistance, Organisation of Iranian People's Fedayean, The People's Democratic Party of Iran, Supporters of Iran Nation Party, Organisation of National Republicans of Iran, The Tudeh Party of Iran, Centre for Iranian Social Democrats.

The following handbill states N.A.M.I.R's position on the recent US legislation on Iran and the talk of US military attacks on Iran :

The ruling regime in Iran, defiant of the wishes of the majority of the people in the country, is continuing its violation of human rights and at the same time sponsoring terrorism, despite the numerous condemnations by the international organisations.
Some Western powers, based on their seventeen years of futile dialogue experiments with the regime are now hoping that by bringing economic pressures the Islamic Republic will be forced to observe the international laws and begin peaceful co-existence with others.
National Movement of Iranian Resistance, which from the beginning, under the leadership of Dr. Shapur Bakhtiar, has been the vanguard of the struggle against this reactionary and terrorist regime, deems it necessary to remind these powers that it will support any endeavours aimed at isolating the clerics in Iran and forcing them to respect human rights and reject terrorism. However any retributions which will result in more suffering by the oppressed masses of Iran or any destruction of the Iranian national assets will be strongly condemned.

Protest Rally Outside the French Embassy in London

A protest rally will be held outside the French embassy in London on Friday 14th of June at 2:00 p.m coinciding with the cremation of Dr. Kourosh Aryamanesh's body in Paris.
This protest is against the continuing assassinations of Iranian opposition figures in France and the French government's lack of resolution in dealing effectively with the Islamic Republic of Iran.

The Resolution of the Protest March Against Deportations of Iranians in Holland :

A few days after the United Nations Human Rights Commission issued a resolution strongly condemning the critical human rights situation in Iran with regards to the freedom of expression and thought, freedom of press, persecution, torture and execution of political dissidents and minorities, terrorist acts in other countries and so forth, the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs released an ill-founded report claiming improvements in Iran in a suspicious attempt to pave the way for the Dutch Ministry of Justice to plan forced repatriation of a large group of Iranian asylum seekers to the Islamic dictatorsip.

We draw the Dutch government's and public's attention to the bitter fact that Iranian asylum seekers have fled the brutal Islamic regime and have left their family members, friends, all their belongings and, above all, their beloved country in the hope to find peace and freedom in the Netherlands.

We, the participants in this demonstration, hereby express our heart-felt hatred of the criminal Islamic tyranny in Iran and strongly condemn the suppression of basic human rights by the mullahs. We would like to ask the Dutch government and the public the following:

1. To suspend the departure order of our countryman Mr. Reza Makarem Akhlagi, who has been on hungerstrike since April 17th and grant him sanctuary in the Netherlands;

2. For the Dutch Ministry of Foreing Affairs to review its report on May 1st about Iran and to consider the above mentioned report of the United Nations Human Rights Commission and the undeniable facts about the critical human rights violations by the islamic regime;

3. For the Dutch Ministry of Justice to reconsider the forced repatriation of Iranian asylum seekers and grant them sanctuary in the Netherlands;

4. For the Dutch Government to abandon, in the name of human dignity, the political and economic ties with the Islamic regime and to stop the so-called 'critical dialogue' with the Iranian regime;

5. For the Dutch Government and the Parliament to condemn the severe human rights violations in Iran and its terrorist acts against political dissidents in exile.

This resolution is made on behalf of Iranian asylum seekers of the AZC (Asylum Seekers Centre - SV) Groesbeek and the AZC Nijmegen and will be sent to the Dutch Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Dutch House of Representatives and the mass media."

Dear Mrs. E. Schmitz

It is with great sadness that we learn, the government of the Netherlands which is a democratic country and has a long established record of respect for human rights and tolerance in society, has come to the wrong and immoral conclusion that the human rights in the Islamic Republic of Iran has improved and thus has decided to deport many of the Iranian asylum seekers.

The Islamic Republic of Iran is a religious apartheid, which not only denies the Iranian people their political freedom but also tells its people what to wear, drink, eat, think, listen to and behave. The basis of this government is not by the approval of the public but by the will of Allah and the laws of the Koran, written 1400 years ago.

Like all dictatorships based on ideologies, the most despicable criminal acts are considered justified if they are deemed to be in the interests of its ideology.

If your government decides to deport these asylum seekers, it will not only be a stain on your country's good human rights record and an immoral act but will also be a boost for the Islamic Republic's propaganda efforts.

We hope that this recent decision by the Ministry of Justice has been as a result of an error in judgement and not for short term trade interests. For the Islamic Republic is doomed to failure and will eventually collapse.

We are happy to submit more evidence and documents for you to reconsider deporting the Iranian asylum seekers if this decision is based on the ill founded report claiming improvements in human rights.

Yours sincerely,

A.Esfahani on behalf of N.A.M.I.R

To All Iranian Patriots : Please write similar letters of protest to Mrs. Schmitz, the Dutch Minister of Justice, at the above address. Do not forget your countrymen, and do not let other Iranians to be humiliated by foreign governments. This is the least you can do, and will only take a few minutes of your time. Let us have enough of seminars and conferences and lectures, let us show a united concerted action front when it comes to dealing with our common enemy, the Islamic Republic this source of all evil.
